Major Studio
I chose to design a restaurant for my last
major project. While looking through some ideas, what really got me inspired
was a picture of a tree divided into four equal parts to portray each season of
the year, i.e., summer, winter, autumn and spring. The transition through these
four seasons marks a great deal of importance for our weather conditions.
That's when I decided to show this transition of climates and temperatures
through my design for the restaurant.
The concept moved through variations in sketches
and finally reached an end with contour undulations. I used contour lines to
show the ups and downs of the different seasonal temperatures. The lowest part
in the design would portray 'summer' as it marks the inner most heated core of
the earth, whereas the highest point in the design would portray 'winter' as it
moves further away from the earth's core and marks the highest distance from
it. Meanwhile spring and autumn just play the tricks above or below ground
level.
Situated just off the shore in Bandstand,
Mumbai, this restaurant consists of a sophisticated dining space for 250-300
people, with a bar, and a rooftop park.
Keeping in mind the climatic conditions of the surrounding area, the modern day technology, as well as the harm caused to the earth by the extreme modernization, I decided to keep my design as sustainable as possible. I've used wood for each of the undulating levels as well as some of the support system, included the application of a green roof and lastly enclosed the structure with glass.
A chinese restaurant, which was inspired by a designer clock shaped with circles all around, was turned into octagons and the lines converting them were converted into passageways to move from one place to another. The entire structure follows a symmetrical form featuring a typical Chinese structure. Authentic chinese means use of a lot of wood, and so does this design.
The main attraction of this restaurant, apart from being on a lake, is its roof structure, which was made to suit the idea of the chinese pagoda.
The main dining area is hosted for mainly families or groups of three of more. There has been a separate area allotted for people in two's as well. And finally comes the kitchen, a bar/lounge, two private rooms, 2 bathrooms and a reception as one enters.
Office Studio
The office design was based on a star having many triangles. Using that theory, I got lines running at uneven angles leaving the centre forming the relevant aforementioned structure.
Since the office was being designed for MTV, a highly youthful organization, the workspace could be as much as loud. And so I moved forward by focusing on its base - The Star.
Given Layout Plan
The centre portion forms a deception of the star. This lavish office design accommodates 12-15 employees. The workstations placed in the centre were made as separate pieces of furniture design. It has been left for the centre giving an individual area for the general employees. The number of workstations can be increased from 8 to 16, putting together extra 8 facing the ones present already, giving space for a number of extra employees as well.
Past and Present
Past and Present studio is pretty self explanatory. As students, we were to take a space that was of immense value and change its architecture in a way thats only beneficial. I decided to take up a triangular space set for parking at a renowned location in Bombay - Kala Ghoda.
This space is also used as a multi-cultural event spot for a month or two every year. The Kala Ghoda festival is an art, music, dance, and creativity festival.
Apart from showcasing young talents and all the other fun and frolic upsides to this event, there was a downside- the parking space was moved, hence causing a lot traffic that time of the year. So, I came up with a simple solution, to use the piece of land as a multi-storied event space. Ground floor remains parking, first floor becomes ground to all the stalls for various talent showcasing. Second floor is a restaurant-cum-banquet hall and Lastly, third floor is a multiple deity temple.
Sustainable Studio
After being inspired by this magnetic floating bed designed by Dutchman Janjaap Ruijssenaars, I decided to take magnetic levitation to a new level. I designed a home for a single user that would be operated with various sustainable technologies including water tanks for storage, magnetic generator for electricity, floating house made of cardboard layers, and a composting system for the bathroom and kitchen wastage.
Initial research was carried out by working on a prototype to test the technology. I along with a batch-mate prepared this project to show the generation of electricity through the working of magnets in the most sustainable manner. From there I started working on an individual design to create a levitating home for a bachelor.
The house consisted of the simple necessities like a tiny kitchen and bathroom, a bed, a wardrobe and a small entertainment unit. This levitating house has to be held by strong ropes on the four corners to control the levitation from pushing too high up as the magnetic field between the cardboard box and the magnets embedded inside ground could be unpredictable and it all weighs on the theory - like poles of two magnets repel each other.
Public Space Design Studio
Inspiration was derived from a simple stack and fall game of Jenga. Using these blocks and stacking with in a number of formations, I reached a final concept of making the blocks function as steps and helping people move up and down.
As a specification for a public space design, we were given an assignment to design a bus stop within a restricted space frame of 5m x 2.5m.
My design consisted of wooden blocks acting as steps that run through with practical as well as aesthetic elements. There is a ticketing booth and an information board outside the structure. The design consists of 2 levels of seating, one indoor through the sliding glass doors, and another outdoor which is on a higher level when you use the block steps to climb up. There are a set of block steps leading underground as well, which takes you to a refreshment booth where a small range of snacks and drinks could be made available.
